A credential that documents what you actually completed
Certification here isn't a participation certificate for showing up. It's a record of specific courses completed and, for technical courses, competency demonstrated hands-on. There are two credential tracks, and you can hold one or both.
Certified SPF Applicator
Documents technical application competency — chemistry fundamentals, gun technique across both open-cell and closed-cell systems, rig operation, and the required safety and compliance knowledge every applicator needs.
Certified SPF Business Operator
Documents operational and business fundamentals — licensing and insurance awareness, pricing, estimating, and the same required safety knowledge, for owners and crew leads responsible for a business, not just a spray gun.
Estimating, Material Yield & Quality Control counts toward this credential as a required course; the technical application courses are recommended but elective for this track.

Each credential lists specific required courses. Electives can round out your knowledge, but the credential is tied to the defined core list.
Demonstrate hands-on skill
Technical courses require in-person lab demonstration — gun control, pass technique, rig start-up — evaluated directly, not assumed from a written test alone.

Once required courses are complete, your credential documents exactly which courses and competencies it's based on.
This credential is not a state contractor license
Spray Foam Institute certification documents training completed and, for technical courses, competency demonstrated in a hands-on lab setting. It is issued by our independent institute — it is not a government-issued license, and it does not substitute for any state contractor or insulation licensing requirement that may apply to your business.
SPF and insulation contractor licensing requirements vary significantly by state and change over time. Always confirm your state's current requirements directly with your state's contractor licensing board before making any decision that affects your legal standing to operate.
