Courses & prerequisites
SPF Application Fundamentals and OSHA Safety & Compliance for SPF Crews require no prior experience and are built as entry points. The other technical courses list SPF Application Fundamentals as a prerequisite, since they build directly on the technique it covers.
OSHA Safety & Compliance and New Business Owner Fundamentals have no prerequisites and can be taken any time. The technical courses build on each other in a defined order — SPF Application Fundamentals first, then Open-Cell vs. Closed-Cell Techniques, Rig Operation & Maintenance, and Estimating, Material Yield & Quality Control.
Lecture and knowledge content is available online for every course. Technical courses that involve hands-on gun or equipment control require an in-person lab day to complete, because that skill has to be demonstrated, not just described.
It varies by course — from a single day (OSHA Safety & Compliance) to three days in-person (SPF Application Fundamentals). Each course page lists its specific duration and format.
Certification & credential
No. Our credential documents completed coursework and demonstrated competency — it is not a government-issued license. State licensing requirements for SPF work vary; confirm current requirements directly with your state's contractor licensing board.
Completing the required core courses in the technical and safety track earns the Certified SPF Applicator credential. Completing New Business Owner Fundamentals plus OSHA Safety & Compliance earns the Certified SPF Business Operator credential. See our certification page for full requirements.
Certification documents the courses completed and competency demonstrated at that point in time. As with most technical fields, we recommend staying current — take a refresher or an updated course if it's been several years or if equipment and standards you learned on have changed significantly.
