If you're new to spray polyurethane foam, one term you'll hear constantly, from day one, is isocyanate. It's worth understanding clearly and early, because it's the central chemical hazard almost every SPF safety practice — respirators, ventilation, re-entry timing — exists to control.

What isocyanate is, in plain terms

Most SPF systems are two-component products: an "A-side" containing an isocyanate (commonly MDI — methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) and a "B-side" resin blend. When the two react during spraying, they form the polyurethane foam. During and immediately after application, airborne isocyanate aerosols and vapors are present in the work area — that's the exposure risk applicators and anyone nearby need to manage.

Why it's treated as a serious hazard

Isocyanates are respiratory and skin sensitizers. That means repeated uncontrolled exposure can cause a person to become sensitized — after which even a low level of future exposure can trigger a reaction, potentially including occupational asthma. This is why the industry treats isocyanate exposure control as a standing, ongoing practice rather than a one-time precaution, and why OSHA has a specific permissible exposure limit for MDI: 200 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) as a 15-minute ceiling limit.

This is general safety background, not a substitute for your employer's written respiratory protection program or a safety professional's site-specific guidance. If you don't know what your company's program requires, ask before your next job.

The basic protections you should expect on a job

  • Respiratory protection appropriate to the exposure — commonly supplied-air or full-facepiece respirators for applicators, per OSHA's respiratory protection standard, 29 CFR 1910.134
  • Medical evaluation and fit testing before you're required to wear a respirator, not after
  • Proper ventilation and a defined re-entry time before anyone without respiratory protection enters the sprayed space
  • Skin and eye protection — coveralls, gloves, and eye protection appropriate to the work
  • Training on what isocyanate exposure is, how it happens, and what your specific PPE is protecting against — not just being handed equipment with no explanation

Questions worth asking as a new applicator

If you're starting out, it's reasonable — and it's your right under OSHA's hazard communication standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200 — to ask your employer directly: What's our written respiratory protection program? When was I fit tested, and when's the next one due? What's the re-entry time for the space we just sprayed? A company with a real program will have clear answers.
